Welcome to a new season

Dear Hopkinton area Nordic skier,

I hope that this finds you well, as this strange and difficult year winds down towards the winter. If there was ever a year in which the prospect of Nordic skiing was especially pleasant, surely it’s this one!

The Blackwater Nordic Ski Club is eagerly waiting for the snow to fly. We will once again be grooming trails for the public to use, offering Bill Koch League (BKL) lessons and activities for children and families, and providing opportunities for masters’ skiing and night skiing.

As you undoubtedly know, for the past two winters the we have been limited in our grooming options, but we have successfully negotiated an arrangement to get skiers back onto our traditional trails at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds, in addition to Gould Hill Farm and Houston Fields (as needed). All we need now is for the weather to cooperate and to send us snow, early and often.

The club also provides the foundation on which our local middle and high school Nordic ski teams train. Nordic skiing is a hugely popular activity for our schools, offering a “no-cut” team that guarantees a chance to compete for any student willing to put in the effort. The Hopkinton High School boys’ and girls’ teams have won numerous state championships and sent many individual racers on to state, regional, and college competition. But the perhaps the most impressive feature of the program is the sheer number of students who compete.

All of these opportunities are created and maintained by the Blackwater Nordic Ski Club. We are an allvolunteer, non-profit organization that is entirely dependent on membership dues, donations, and the time invested by our volunteers. With this in mind, we ask you to support us in three ways:

  1. Please renew your membership soon (forms enclosed)!
  2. Please consider making a donation in addition to your membership dues. The cost of keeping the trails groomed and offering club activities is always increasing, and memberships are not sufficient to keep us afloat. Your donations sustain us.
  3. Please fill out and return the enclosed hard copy of the liability release form(s) with your membership payment.

We cannot accept online liability release forms. Please fill out a form for each Blackwater Nordic member who is covered by a membership; in other words, each family member needs to fill out and sign a form, or have a form filled out and signed by a parent or guardian. Extra forms can be printed out from the Files and Forms Page on our website at

Remember, too, that club members receive 20% discounts on Nordic ski equipment and clothing from our friends at S&W Sports in Concord. Thank you for supporting Blackwater Nordic!

Finally, we ask that you please practice social distancing by wearing a mask when you’re not on the trails or if you’re within 6 feet of other individuals.
